CONFERENCE
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
The Planning Committee for
the 2005 Mine Water Treatment Technology Conference is soliciting
abstracts for consideration as oral presentations. Papers will be accepted
for conference proceedings, but are not required for a presentation. The
presentations will focus on the theme of passive treatment, chemical
treatment, and resource recovery. Resource recovery includes the recovery
and reuse of minerals in sludge or the reuse of mine pool water. Topic
suggestions include, but are not limited to:
Passive Treatment
Design and performance of limestone-based passive treatment systems
Design and performance of sulfate-reducing passive treatment systems
Case studies of treatment systems and “lessons learned”
Role of microbiology in treating mine drainage (Mn and Fe oxidation,
sulfate reduction)
Chemistry of limestone dissolution and sulfate reduction
In situ treatment
Settling characteristics of sludge
Passive Treatment operation and maintenance
Trace metals and passive treatment
Active Treatment
Sludge densification and management/handling
Settling characteristics of Sludge
Low-cost active treatment
Use of oxidants and alkaline chemicals
Chemical feed systems
Treatment Costs
Incline plate clarifiers vs. conventional clarifiers
Automation technologies
Resource Recovery
Use of demonstrated applications of the use of metals (Al, Fe, Mn,
etc.) or minerals recovered from mine drainage
Use of iron sludge as a corrosive inhibitor
Use or potential use of iron recovered from sludge in the cement, press
metals, or agricultural industry
Use of mine pool water in power plants, golf courses, or agricultural
industry.
IMPORTANT
To
be considered as a presenter,
you must complete and submit the
on-line Call
for Presentations form
no later than May
6, 2005.
Preliminary abstracts are limited to 250 words, should list all
authors and their affiliations, and indicate the corresponding
author. Abstracts
should provide a problem description, summary of methods, and major
findings. Presentation titles should be descriptive, but kept to a
reasonable length.
Any problems or questions regarding abstract submission should be directed
to Brent Means at
bmeans@osmre.gov
(717-782-4036) or Lois Uranowski at
luranows@osmre.gov (412-937-2805).
Authors of accepted abstracts are required to submit a PowerPoint
presentation and have the option of submitting full-length paper for
publication in the proceedings. Details will accompany notification.
